The Workhouse Arts Center Glass Program is a collective and highly interactive environment with the goal of the promotion of the glass arts through research, education and outreach. Having trouble registering online? No problem; call us and we can register you over the phone at 703-584-2900.

Flameworking Sculpture Bootcamp (Winter)

Advanced Beginner-Intermediate Skill Levels: Young Adults & Adults

Instructor: Sarah Wicks

Through this workshop we will discuss how to render real world items, such as animals, in glass.   During the first day of the class we will analyze and draw the shapes and forms that compose different types of animals before flameworking them in borosilicate and soft glass using a variety of sculptural techniques. For the second day of class, you are encouraged to bring photos with you to class of an animal or object that inspires you.  Using the analysis learned in the first day of class, you will break down the shapes of your chosen animal or object and then create your interpretation of it in glass.  Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and images to class. Some flameworking experience required. A one-hour lunch break has been incorporated into the length of this workshop.

Photo Transfers on Fused Glass (Winter)

All skill levels: Young Adults & Adults

Instructor: Sandi Martina

Create your own photo keepsakes! Choose your favorite photo, design a glass frame and fire image onto glass. On first day, students will make glass blanks to fire images onto choosing from one 8x10 and one 3x3 magnet; two 5x7s and one 3x3 magnet or five 3x3 magnets. Digital files required, please bring jpeg images on a flash drive or your laptop. Files can also be emailed after the first class. Images can be photos of any subject — portraits, pets, landscapes; poems and quotes; or original drawings and paintings. Images will be sized depending on design. On day two, we will print images onto the decal paper then transfer images to your glass blanks. Additional glass components can be added at this stage. When complete, pieces will be loaded for final firing. 

*Please note that once fired, images become sepia toned.

Fused Art Glass 102 (Winter)

Intermediate to Advanced, Young Adults & Adults

Instructor: David Barnes

A follow-on workshop that builds upon the topics and experiences covered in the Fused Art Glass 101 workshop.  In this workshop, one will learn details in nonlinear design, fusing techniques, glass cutting, assembly, embellishment, kiln firing and slumping and problem solving. The class will include lecture, demonstration and student application of additional techniques in glass cutting and cold-working. Students will make an 8” square piece to be draped and a circle piece which will be slumped. Please bring a bag lunch to class.

Independent Flame (Spring)

Instructors: Staff Monitored

This class is perfect for the advanced student or glass artĀ­ist who prefers to work independently or alongside other advanced and experienced flame workers. Each particiĀ­pant is requested to share a short presentation on any flameworking topic to their classmates. For example, a specific forming, shaping or color application technique, etc.  Participants are given a 27-hour pass in which they can use during any time that Open Studio or another Independent Flame slot if available. (Meets in W-7, Rm. 711) *Please Note- Enrollment in Independent Flame is limited to 5 (per slot/day). All Independent Flame participants must be self-sufficient, provide their own materials and can properly use equipment, kilns, etc.

Beginning Flameworking (Spring)

Beginner Skill Level: Young Adults and Adults

Would you like to learn basic flameworking and to give it a try before taking a more in-depth class? Don’t know if you’d like to learn bead making or sculptural work? Don’t know what flameworking, soft glass or boro glass means? This may be the class for you. We will explore the very basics and get you started on the flameworking torch with an introduction to both main types of flameworking glasses. Learn how to safely operate a torch and annealing kiln. Learn the difference between soft and hard glass. How to make basic beads and some basic shapes in Borosilicate glass work. Students will make a variety of objects that will gain them knowledge in glass types, glass terms, and starter techniques. This class is intended for complete beginners who have never been on a torch or taken a flameworking class.

Learn the fundamentals of Flameworking with Boro (hard) glass. This recurring weekly class will cover setting up a studio, studio safety, flame characteristics and purpose, gravity and hand positioning, and fundamentals of glass as applied to flameworking. Instructor will also cover creation of marbles, pendants, flowers, ornaments, sculpting and more.

Students will learn design concepts and how to choose which technique will best accomplish their goal. Focus will be on process and exploring possibilities that can be achieved with glass.

An initial two-day exposure to kiln-formed fused art glass. This workshop will include lecture, demonstration and student application of the basic principles in fusing glass including the creation of a simple 6” square geometric glass project. The class will cover basic concepts of glass design, color, glass types, and glass behavior in the kiln, kiln firing processes, glass cutting and coldworking, assembly, slumping and safety. Flameworking for Fusing Workshop (Summer)

Beg. - Adv. Skill levels: Young Adults & Adults

Instructor: Linda Condray

Are you looking for another technique to enhance your fused objects? Let’s get flaming! This class will focus on off mandrel work to use as embellishments in fusing work. Using Bullseye rods and torches, we will start out making simple stringers and other items to incorporate in fused wares, from there we will move to making three dimensional flowers. We will then incorporate these elements into a fused piece while retaining their 3D nature. No torching experience needed. It is a good idea to have a basic knowledge of fusing, but not essential. *Please note-we will not be teaching glass cutting or fusing principals.  Please bring a sketchbook, images for inspiration and a bag lunch. (Meets in W-7, Rm. 711)

A follow-on workshop that builds upon the topics and experiences covered in the Fused Art Glass 101 workshop.  In this workshop, one will learn details in nonlinear design, fusing techniques, glass cutting, assembly, embellishment, kiln firing and slumping and problem solving. The class will include lecture, demonstration and student application of additional techniques in glass cutting and cold-working. Students will make an 8” square piece to be draped and a circle piece which will be slumped. Please bring a bag lunch to class. (Meets in W-7, Rm. 716)
