The Workhouse Art Center hosts a wide variety of visual arts classes offered weekdays and weekends, at a range of times throughout the day. Try your hand at a new medium with a one or two day workshops or hone in on your skills with one of our 4 to 10 week classes. Having trouble registering online? Spring Classes

Bold Brushwork 2 (Spring)

All Skill Levels, Young Adult to Adult
Instructor: Suzanne Clark

Introduction to indirect painting or painting in layers using oil paints. we will work on bigger canvas and spend multiple sessions working on the same painting. Learn about the use of painting mediums to paint in glazes or thick impastos. Learn to mix the right color and how color is influenced by the colors around it. Bring a few reference photos to work from and we’ll figure out which would work the best. This class follows Bold Brushwork, but that class is not a prerequisite for this one.

Beginning & Intermediate Oil Painting (Spring)

Beginner to Intermediate Skill Levels: Adults Only

Instructor: Phoebe Peterson

Students will learn about value, color, and composition. In class demos will show the basics of Grisaille painting and “blocking-in”. Topics that will be discussed include paint application, mixing clean colors and harmonious grays, the use of hard and soft edges as well as creating the effect of light. Students are encouraged to bring their own photographs or still life resource material to create their own compositions. Instruction will be given to each student individually, at their level of experience, so that each may reach their own goals and discover their own style.

Chinese Brush Painting (Spring)

All Skill Levels, Young Adults & Adults

Instructor: Hsi-Mei Yates

Chinese Brush Painting can trace its culture back over 2000 years of Chinese history and art. There is no need for previous painting experience to enjoy this class; all levels are welcome. The instructor will begin with simple brush strokes and guide you through the step by step process of creating flowers and birds in this traditional style.


Spring Quarter: 9 weeks

Morning Session: Thursday April 8, 11am-1pm

Evening Session: Thursday April 8, 6pm–8pm


Tuition: $220

Materials Fee: Optional $80 kit includes black ink, rice paper, one large bamboo brush, one small bamboo brush, felt, a watercolor container, a set of 12 watercolors, a mixing plate, and a small dish.

Payable to the instructor at first class. Or bring your own supplies.

Intermediate Watercolor- Spring Themes

Intermediate to Advanced Skill Levels, Adults

Instructor: Gwen Bragg

This class is best for students with prior watercolor experience. Students will select from a variety of projects including but not limited, to spring flowers and gardens, working with a limited palette, and narrative painting. All projects are designed to strengthen watercolor painting skills. Demonstrations, individual instruction and group critiques will foster creativity in all students.

Painting the Figure in Oil (Spring)

Intermediate- Advanced: Ages 18 and Up

Instructor: Joe Granski

 Focusing on gesture, color, and form, students will learn how to paint the figure through direct observation of nude and clothed models. Students will learn basics of human anatomy as well a focus on painting hands and faces. Projects include 5 single-class paintings and one multi-class painting created over 3 weeks.

Working from photographs, students will learn how to paint accurate and dynamic portraits. Lessons will be structured around learning the planes of the face, realistic flesh tones, and how to capture the character and personality of the subject.
